TIFF and WEBP: what changes
Converting TIFF to WEBP is a quick way to make website images lighter, so pages load faster without looking worse.
TIFF Tagged Image File Format
TIFF is a lossless format used in printing, scanning and archiving. It keeps full quality at the price of large files, and most browsers cannot display it.
WEBP WebP image
WEBP is a modern web format that is usually 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at the same visible quality, and it can hold transparency too. All current browsers show it, though some older programs do not.
Good to know before you convert
- TIFF stores every pixel exactly, while WEBP saves space by simplifying fine detail. The WEBP will be much smaller. You can set the quality; 85 or more is hard to tell from the original.
- Transparent backgrounds are kept, because both TIFF and WEBP support them.
- For a TIFF that contains several pages, the first page is converted.
Questions and answers
Is a transparent background kept?
Yes. Both formats support transparency.
Can I control the size of the WEBP file?
Yes. The quality slider trades file size against detail. Lower values give smaller files.
Will the WEBP look different from the TIFF?
At normal settings the difference is very hard to see. The notes on this page explain exactly what changes.
Can I convert several TIFF files at once?
Yes. Add them together. One result downloads directly; several are packed into a ZIP.
