BMP and WEBP: what changes
Converting BMP to WEBP is a quick way to make website images lighter, so pages load faster without looking worse.
BMP Windows Bitmap
BMP is an old, very simple Windows format that stores pixels with no compression. Files are large, but some older software and devices still ask for it.
WEBP WebP image
WEBP is a modern web format that is usually 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at the same visible quality, and it can hold transparency too. All current browsers show it, though some older programs do not.
Good to know before you convert
- BMP stores every pixel exactly, while WEBP saves space by simplifying fine detail. The WEBP will be much smaller. You can set the quality; 85 or more is hard to tell from the original.
Questions and answers
Can I control the size of the WEBP file?
Yes. The quality slider trades file size against detail. Lower values give smaller files.
Will the WEBP look different from the BMP?
At normal settings the difference is very hard to see. The notes on this page explain exactly what changes.
Can I convert several BMP files at once?
Yes. Add them together. One result downloads directly; several are packed into a ZIP.
