HEIC and WEBP: what changes
HEIC photos from an iPhone often will not open on Windows PCs, in older programs or on websites. Converting to WEBP makes them usable everywhere.
HEIC High Efficiency Image (Apple photos)
HEIC is the format iPhones and iPads use for camera photos. It takes about half the space of a JPG, but many Windows PCs, websites and older devices cannot open it.
WEBP WebP image
WEBP is a modern web format that is usually 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at the same visible quality, and it can hold transparency too. All current browsers show it, though some older programs do not.
Good to know before you convert
- Both formats save space by simplifying detail. Keep the quality setting at 85 or above so that converting does not visibly soften the picture.
Questions and answers
Do I need an iPhone or a Mac for this?
No. The HEIC photo is decoded by Filetaki in any modern browser, including on Windows and Android.
Can I control the size of the WEBP file?
Yes. The quality slider trades file size against detail. Lower values give smaller files.
Will the WEBP look different from the HEIC?
At normal settings the difference is very hard to see. The notes on this page explain exactly what changes.
Can I convert several HEIC files at once?
Yes. Add them together. One result downloads directly; several are packed into a ZIP.
