WEBP and GIF: what changes
WEBP images saved from websites do not open in every program. Converting to GIF gives you a file that older software, printers and upload forms accept.
WEBP WebP image
WEBP is a modern web format that is usually 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at the same visible quality, and it can hold transparency too. All current browsers show it, though some older programs do not.
GIF Graphics Interchange Format
GIF is limited to 256 colours and is best known for short animations. For still pictures it suits simple graphics more than photos.
Good to know before you convert
- GIF stores pixels without loss, so no further quality is lost in the conversion. It cannot restore detail that the WEBP already discarded, and the file will usually be bigger.
- Transparent backgrounds are kept, because both WEBP and GIF support them.
- GIF can show at most 256 colours. Filetaki picks the best 256 for your picture; photos may show slight banding in smooth areas such as skies.
Questions and answers
Is a transparent background kept?
Yes. Both formats support transparency, although GIF pixels are either fully see-through or fully solid, with nothing in between.
Will the GIF look different from the WEBP?
