PNG and GIF: what changes
People convert PNG to GIF when a file made for logos, screenshots and graphics with transparency has to be used for simple graphics and short animations.
PNG Portable Network Graphics
PNG stores every pixel exactly, with no loss, and supports transparent backgrounds. Files are larger than JPG for photos but stay perfectly sharp for text, logos and screenshots.
GIF Graphics Interchange Format
GIF is limited to 256 colours and is best known for short animations. For still pictures it suits simple graphics more than photos.
Good to know before you convert
- Both formats store pixels without loss, so the picture looks exactly the same after converting.
- Transparent backgrounds are kept, because both PNG and GIF support them.
- GIF can show at most 256 colours. Filetaki picks the best 256 for your picture; photos may show slight banding in smooth areas such as skies.
Questions and answers
Is a transparent background kept?
Yes. Both formats support transparency, although GIF pixels are either fully see-through or fully solid, with nothing in between.
Will the GIF look different from the PNG?
At normal settings the difference is very hard to see. The notes on this page explain exactly what changes.
Can I convert several PNG files at once?
Yes. Add them together. One result downloads directly; several are packed into a ZIP.
