JPG and ICO: what changes
A JPG logo has to become an ICO file before it can be used as a website favicon or a Windows icon.
JPG JPEG image
JPG is the everyday photo format. It stores millions of colours in a small file by discarding detail the eye barely notices, and it opens on every phone, computer and website.
ICO Windows icon
ICO is the icon format of Windows and of website favicons, the small picture in a browser tab. Icons are square and at most 256 pixels wide.
Good to know before you convert
- ICO stores pixels without loss, so no further quality is lost in the conversion. It cannot restore detail that the JPG already discarded, and the file will usually be bigger.
- Icons are square and at most 256 pixels wide. Larger or non-square pictures are scaled down and centred on a transparent square.
Questions and answers
What size is the icon?
Up to 256 × 256 pixels, which browsers and Windows scale down as needed. Start from a square image for the best result.
Will the ICO look different from the JPG?
No. The conversion is lossless, so the picture is identical.
Can I convert several JPG files at once?
Yes. Add them together. One result downloads directly; several are packed into a ZIP.
